Minitube 0.9 Released (Flashless HD YouTube Video on your desktop)

Minitube – a desktop application for searching and playing YouTube videos (including HD!) without the need for Flash – released version 0.9 earlier today.

Minitube is not about cloning the original YouTube web interface, it aims to create a new TV-like experience.

We’ve mentioned MiniTube previously so newcomers may wish to get an introduction to it via our previous article (click here).

Minitube 0.9
Back to the 0.9 version and the developer himself describes the release a more of a “polish” than packing in shiny and “mind-blowing” new features. As such it fixes many issue users – including myself! – have found troublesome.

New Features/Changes since MiniTube 0.8

  • Ability to clear recent keywords (Finally!)
  • Enhanced fullscreen mode with toolbar and playlist on Linux
  • Fixed buggy toolbar search box
  • Fixed long queries in the recent keywords list
  • Fixed time formatting bug with videos longer than an hour
  • Norwegian translation

It requires installation of QT4.5+ , I don’t want to install that giant for such a small program.

    • Zachariah Thomas

Qt isn’t that large, just a lot of split up packages.
Set the preferences in synaptic so that recommended aren’t counted as dependencies then install it.

    A PPA would be nice.

    • ninjapirate89

Whoops! Just read your article on version 0.8 and saw the PPA. :D

Great application. It works flawlessly for me.

Hmm, the getdeb link doesn’t work for me.

I still miss the “Related videos”.

    totem plays youtube videos too

  • Crazy Andy

Seems a little redundant – Ubuntu’s Movie Player (Totem) lets you search and view YouTube vids

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

I don’t think “redundant” is a word i would use – this is flashless, provides a constant stream (i.e. until you press stop) based on whatever you throw it it and can handle HD streams.

Totem on the other hand crashes when i try to switch between youtube videos.

      Minittube 1 Totem 0

      • Crazy Andy

Hm…that’s weird – I don’t crash when switching. Didn’t know totem used flash, though.

d0od is right. I love Totem, and I would like to use it for everything, but when changing Youtube videos it crashes so I will use Minitube (I still haven’t used it). I haven’t been able to watch TV with Totem yet, so I have to use Kaffeine… I hope they will fix those problems, because I really like Totem (I prefer Totem than VLC).

  • Rajasun

Yeah it is an awesome app. Comparisons with totem are ridiculous. There is just no comparison. Totem strives to be an all-in-one multimedia soultion. Minitube handles only youtube clips in a tv like manner.

Features wise, Minitube would be even more awesome if it allows users to download and save the clips onto HD.

can this play youtube videos that have ads such as movies/tvshows from crackle? still dont see the point of this you can set up vlc or mplayer plugin to replace the flash player for youtube also theres a html5 player for youtube that doesnt require flash.

  • http://www.linuxmint.com/ Jimbo

This app will be kinda pointless a year from now. Google is already trialling the HTML5 version of youtube which doesn’t require flash.

  • Apollo495

Great app! For my eee-pc it seems to be the only way to watch youtube hd video with no laggs!

  • bhm

What the hell is with this new trend? It feels like any previous distros got ditched on launchpad. Only Karmic and Lucid.
Soon there will be repos for only unnamed distros – Mothrfucking Mantis 10.10.

    • bhm

Weirdly it’s not package with source;). At least I got binary.

About Totem playing youtube videos. h.264 plugin doesn’t work for me. It lags as hell when switching videos. Minitube is fast and surprisingly for QT app light.

      • http://sinlugareneltiempo.blogspot.com/ Rubenmv

QT only apps are usually light and fast.

        • bhm

Oh, I would not agree on that. This usually depends on “if you run KDE” and/or version of QT, which is getting better with new revisions.

Would be great if it allowed me to paste links into it, as I generally watch youtube videos when linked it from others.

  • Armitage

I had no video or audio until I installed phonon-gstreamer-backend. After that it worked great, much better than youtube in firefox on this slow pc.
