Impression Themes Once Again Proposed For Ubuntu

The impression themes – already available in Karmic via the community-themes package, have been proposed for inclusion in Lucid Lynx.

These updated version of Impression sport cleaner lines, more cohesive design considerations and a few other tweaks here and there. The Metacity for both now use the “small bottom” variant.

Time and time again people have proposed nicer themes and wallpapers than those the internal design team come up with, and time and again they are ignored in favour of the internal designs. I don’t expect anything to change. A few months from now the new artwork will drop and it will be whatever the colour blind designers at Canonical have bodged together. Maybe, just maybe eventually they will do something nice, but whatever it is, it will be an internal design, not just a theme anyone can download already.

I certainly don’t blame canonical for going with their internal themes time and time again – they do pay a team of designer to create a coherent and consistent design, after all.

Lucid is very different, however, given that GTK will be getting RGBA enablement and client side window decoration – these things casual designers are not as -of-yet party to/able to design using.

Quite possibly the nicest themes I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen my fair share of themes. Especially Night Impression

I really don’t like dark themes but impression looks nice.

Man, that Metacity is just awesome. It is something new, fresh and understandable at the same time.
They definitely should grab that idea! Ubuntu needs something unique on other than brown, and lately hated, color theme.

Impression has been knocking about for a while now, so it’s not quite -that- fresh.

That said, i agree. They are wonderful themes – particularly the “metacities” (no idea what the plural of metacity is!)

With all that said, i’m not entirely sure what impression they would give were they default. They’re a bit -too- dark

By fresh I meant, something between Mac OSX and Windows buttons with it’s own distinction. It just doesn’t feel cheap and grabbed like most metacities( that’s quite about right I guess) are.

I have to agree that GTK it self is about too dark. That orange could have more life in it. Somewhat like Zune theme?

This is a very nice theme, dudeh. Thanks.

I am using the night version right now and love it! Hopefully both will make into the release.

I wonder why those themes have to be that dark.. I prefer something light.

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

I’m not sure if it’s because they’re somehow “easier” to get aesthetically pleasing than lighter themes or not, but there seems to be a more concerted effort towards either dark themes and “os x” -esque ‘metal/gray’ themes than anything light.Thankfully the default isn’t changing in Lucid and should look a fair bit nicer.

It looks good, but I still think all shiki-derivatives are the nicest themes.
