Empathy Getting New Theme In Lucid

Empathy will be getting a custom theme for its inclusion in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.

David Siegel, who works for Ubuntu’s Design and User Experience team, posted the news on his twitter account, also mentioning that it’ll be created by the designer of my favourite Empathy/Adium theme – ‘Renkoo’.

This news forms part of Round 4 of the “100 papercuts” push, with this round focusing on Empathy.

Empathy starting to rub off on me, although it does lack a lot of things I love about Pidgin.

Wake me up when it starts working behind a proxy.

Similarly, wake me up when it stops eating my messages and other people’s messages over MSN.

Wake me up when it opens a new window when someone starts a conversation, oh and when it implements file-transfer on the MSN protocol.

AFAIK, it does take effort to track the changes some IM networks/servers make in order to purposefully break compatibility with third-party clients. Why do you think their clients have ads in them? It’s a revenue stream and one they don’t want to lose. Yahoo continually breaks compatibility, so I wouldn’t be surprised if MSN did either.

My point? Maybe Empathy devs aren’t as interested in fixing breakage as Pidgin devs, or perhaps not as interested in particular protocols. I know Microsoft/Windows/MSN is dug in deep in the UK, and I know all this doesn’t matter to you and you just want things to work, but, FYI. ^^

I’m much more interested in Jabber/XMPP/GTalk being fully functional and migrating to it and away from proprietary IM networks, and I think a lot of open source devs are as well, so don’t be surprised to see it working better than other things with SOME open source programs (yes, I know Emesene and Pidgin do better jobs).

Sorry, was more in response to the MSNers. :P

Not saying Empathy doesn’t still suck right now, because it certainly does in a lot of ways in comparison to Pidgin and others. Maybe when it no longer sucks it will have full MSN support as well.

I don’t care about MSN. Empathy doesn’t work behind a frikin proxy! You know, that hing a lot of big organizations have? There are whole countries behind a proxy!
