Lucid To Get New Scanning Tool ‘Simple Scan’

MadsRH over on his awesome blog has just written about 'Simple Scan' €“ a new new scanning tool that Lucid will be getting, repalacing X-Sane.

'Simple Scan'

Simple Scan will provide a new UI for users wanting to scan documents as the current default 'XSane' is both way to complex for simple use and doesn't integrate into the Ubuntu desktop nor allow scanning from within applications.

DocumentScanning Proposed Interface

'Simple Scan' will address all of these and allow users to initiate scanning from various applications but those with so-called 'advanced scanning needs' will need to install an 'a more advanced package'.

Download

You can already (!) try out simple-scan, but be aware that the application is €œin progress’€.

Get it @ http://people.ubuntu.com/~robert-ancell/simple-scan/

PPA: https://launchpad.net/~robert-ancell/+archive/ppa (be aware of what else is in the PPA)

I think I like better the Flegita/Gnome Scan alternative.
The UI in Flegita is, in my opinion, clearer and less crowded.

I use Gnome scan as well and I don’t see why they haven’t been using this instead of xscan in the first place nor why they’re now reinventing the wheel.

I heard they think Gnome-Scan is not stable enough, but I think it would have been better to improve Gnome-Scan.
On the other hand, it seems that simple scan is only another UI for the same backend as xsane, ie sane, so since sane is mature and everything, it might be a good replacement solution, that might not require many efforts, until Gnome-Scan becomes better.

By the way, on ther other hand, I’ve heard that Gnome Scan does support more scanners than Xsane, so if any of you as troubles with simple-scan or xsane, give flegita a try ;â‹…).

Oh thank god. X-Sane is not sane; it’s extremely confusing.

I think Ubuntu is on the right track here regarding the choice of programs, Shuttleworth is pushing forward of an OS that is stable, good-looking, and competes with OS X in terms of usability.

….and then again, as a user you have the option of installing more advanced apps like GIMP and XSane…

    It’s winner strategy honestly :)

Linux Mint using gnome scan ( http://projects.gnome.org/gnome-scan/ ) since version 6, which seems like a better alternative.

    Now, all I need is a scanner…

Hm. I recall a nice scan app written in Python before that was very clean and user-friendly, but the author stopped development. Should’ve picked that up…

    Finally!

Lucid sounds very promising. I just hope they will focus on stability too.

whats wrong with xsane (other than screwed-up photoshop-window-layout it has) I like the features, and can’t see whats so complex about it
