Lucid Alpha 1 A Week Away – What To Expect

After seeing Ara Pulido over on planet.ubuntu remind everyone that Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Alpha 1 is heading our merry way next Thursday, i thought what better way to prepare myself than to share with you the features and changes you can expect to see land in this initial release….

What’s Coming In Alpha 1?
The short answer is nothing that exciting that you’ll notice.

  • Plymouth will be included, replacing the initial USplash boot.
  • AppArmor developments
  • New Default Applications – we’ll see PiTiVi included and The GIMP gone.
  • A New Kernel – Kernel 2.6.32 has been chosen for Lucid
  • Default Filesystem will be ext4 for Lucid
  • Default Bootloader will remain grub2
  • CheckBox may perform performance tests to see if the system is running OK

you probably should make a post on “test drive”, so people can test Lucid Alpha as soon as it comes out.

Will anyone be testing the alpha from here? I think I’ll give it a go, but this time testing I’ll use a virtual machine, unlike what I did with the Karmic betas.

I’m sure I will be testing it out in VB.

I’ll probably wait for a Beta before testing unless I see some major changes in one of the Alphas.

Is there any disadvantage to using VB instead of the LiveCD or actually installing it? I’m mostly going to get the alpha just to test for hardware compatibility and report any bugs.

Virtual machines use virtual hardware and thus you’d be testing the drivers in Ubuntu for that virtual hardware. To test the actual hardware compatibility of your host (real) PC, you should boot into a live environment. Making a bootable USB stick from the alpha image (I use Unetbootin) is easier IMO.

Hey do0d, do you know if kernel 2.6.32 is finally coming out of release candidate for this alpha release? Then I may be able to run virtualbox for once hahaha (see my post on my blog about enabling 3D graphics on an r600/r700 card, and you’ll know what I mean).
