12 Days Of Xmas: Best Apps Of 2009 – Day One

banner

€œOn the first day of Xmas Gwibber gave to me,

my social networks in a tree€¦€

Tree-view, that is.

Yes, Gwibber 2.0 introduced a revamped UI alongside other changes earlier this year – all designed to help the premier social-network application land itself in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.

Sadly it didn’t manage to fix enough niggling issues to be included in Karmic but Gwibber 2.0 was released anyway, giving us all the gift of being endlessly updated by the informal, the interesting and, no doubt, the irritating – all in an easier to use interface with shiny new features and service support.

For making us chirp happily in 2009, Gwibber 2.0 is our first top app of 2009.

Install

You can install Gwibber from the Ubuntu Software Centre by searching 'gwibber'.

PPA

You can find use daily development snapshots by adding the following PPA: -

sudo add-apt repository ppa:gwibber-daily/ppa

Or Intrepid/Jaunty users can add it via the instructions @ https://launchpad.net/~gwibber-daily/+archive/ppa

      I couldn’t possibly confirm or deny ;)

you don’t even use it :S and in the review you didn’t give it a good rating

I do still use gwibber, but i prefer Qwit. However Gwibber 2.0 was such a marked improvement at the time before i found qwit so when i think over 2009 about what apps i loved – gwibber 2.0 was one of them.

I like gwibber 2.0 and use it, but in Karmic the spell checker doesn’t work, which it did in Jaunty.

It works for me, but then I do use the Gwibber daily PPA.

I think I do as well, I am going to have to double check on that. Thanks for the info.

Suggestion: Include a link to the project page of the app you’re blogging about. Plus any known PPAs would be a great help as well.

I know it doesn’t take much to google it, but I think some proper linking would be in the context of a “favorite app” article.

I guess it would and i’ll add it. BUT given i’ve blogged about these apps tons of times in the last few months with ppas, bzr branches and apt urls in pretty much every article on them, i just thought people might be a bit sick of being told how to install them.

The 12 days series of posts isn’t meant to be an introduction to the apps themselves, just a reason why we’ve enjoyed using/blogging about them these last few months..

That’s fair. Then might I suggest for newer readers or those that “pick and choose” articles, you could include a link to the most recent review. Lifehacker does that a lot, eg. “We’ve talked about it a lot [here] and [here].”

I agree, i’m a new reader and the lifehacker style of linking would be nice.

Agreed. I know how to install PPA’s, especially in Karmic now (jeez), but you have new Ubuntu virgins logging in here reading your posts on a daily basis. Plus, in case its late at night and my brain stops functioning, it sure is nice to just copy and paste.

The thing for me that kills Gwibber is the inability to make it see more than the latest 20 tweets. I need many more, which is why I alternate between Qwit and DestroyTwitter

Good thing I don’t need it!

Man, 12 days of Xmas as 12 best apps… what a good idea! Wish I thought of that :P
