Yeah Ubuntu is a good desktop distro, but is it true that you’ll need it to build Chrome OS? Of course not, don’t stretch the truth. Will it be harder to compile it on other distros? Possibly yes, since you may have to install a few more dependencies. Can’t wait to try compiling this over the weekend on Koala!

I still can’t understand how a browser based OS can work. Probably I need to try it out to believe.OTOH, I hope my hardware is supported.

Google Apps is free if you choose standard edition. $50/year only apply if you have more than 50 users in 1 domain (that is, premium edition).

“so if you need to use your computer, and the internet is down, i guess you are out of luck because you cant even use any apps.” Well, netbooks is supposed to be always online. That is why Ubuntu developers help builds ChromeOS, because it’s different target market

just built chromiumos and there are a few problems i have with it. at first, the login screen was fast and responsive, but once you are actually in a session, it is SLLLOOOOWWWW. Moblin was the same way unless it was run on a computer with intel graphics. I tested on both nvidia and ati, i will try intel tomorrow and comment again. chromiumos is exactly what i expected. just an os with only chrome on it. the menu with links to the apps is actually a google service called short links. i tried logging in and it would not log me in. i then did some research and found out that you must be subscribed to google apps, which is $50.00 USD per user, per year. looks like google is actually doing this to make money, and not giving this away for free. from the looks of it, there will not be potential to add new apps to this os since everything is saved on a cloud. lastly, i live in canada, so some of the apps/services they include (hulu, lala, pandora) are not available outside of the united states, which does not seem like a very smart idea. to summarize, i find chromiumos a very restricting os that requires a paid subscription to be able to use it. it also saves your information on a cloud which requires that you are always online. so if you need to use your computer, and the internet is down, i guess you are out of luck because you cant even use any apps. plus costing the same as windows 7, (chrome $50.00/user/year, windows $150/3years) plus that the cost is for EACH user, i think i will stick with ubuntu where i have complete control over my computer experience, where i can use my computer without having to be on the internet and can do much more than chromiumos for the low price of FREE.

Thats just my 2 cents.

I’m not too sure…

Hardware support will need to be hacked in for it to run on anything but Google’s current reference models (an eeepc, basically.) or a virtualbox.

You didn’t read the article; you require Ubuntu to BUILD ChromeOS into an image that you can then install/run in a virtual box.
