Proposed Lucid Theme “UbuntuSun” Available To Download

The artwork proposals for Lucid have begun getting underway this last week or two and the most interesting submission so far is UbuntuSun.

Available in three variants: Dawn, Day & Dusk, the metacity theme is based €œ€¦on the idea of having the sun shine into your windows.€

Original, striking and playing up to Ubuntu's colour palette, I can see this theme becoming one of the more popular suggestions from the hundreds that are proposed every development schedule.

Dream = Design

Sadly UbuntuSun has been mock-up only until now. ingolemo over @ gnome-look.org took on the job of converting the mock-ups into real, usable themes. The results are awesome!

All three variants are available, however the artists does note that, currently, the Ubuntu Dusk version is lacking somewhat. A GTK theme is also included that suits each metacity.

(The rest of the themes proposed for Lucid, so far, are ones you've probably seen a thousand times before on Gnome-look, hence I’ve not been covering them yet.

Once the Alpha is released in a few weeks time the OMG!UBUNTU! Lucid updates will start thick and fast!)

doesn’t look good because the title bar doesn’t blend in with panel of the window, like how Google Chome browsers skins to

    • F

      My thoughts exactly :S

I like how the title bar looks, but it doesn´t match the greyish panel in my opinion.

yuck enough with the brown already, i guess i’ll be sticking with huma-blue.

This theme is brilliant. Definitely one of the best I’ve seen (and the best I’ve seen were highly conceptual mockups that included things outside the ability of GNOME engines until 3.0).

I’m using it now. I’m most interested in Dusk, which can be made better with just a few tweaks to the selected colour.

i actually think that it’s pretty ugly… human is probably the only stock theme i like.

  • Anonymous

Is it just me, or does this theme look terrible?

  • http://disqus.com/forums/omgubuntu/proposed_lucid_theme_ubuntusun_available_to_download/trackback/ Dominick

At first I thought I wouldn’t like it, but then I closed in on the screenshot and realized ‘wow. That’s really great’.

I look forward to if and when this comes stock. Much better, I think, than the current window controls.

Hmm, wow, not bad. I do like the Ubuntu Day version. It looks really nice IMO.

  • Denys

Honestly, i’m not that fond of the flat-coloured titlebar. It’s really gimmicky and… flat. also, there;s a sharp divide on the right between the menu and the bar, and a flat gradient on the left. and that bugs me. Pick a side. :P

However, if teh theme changes as teh day progresses,(smoothly, ofcourse.) I’m in. :P

    New wave as default please.

  • Anonymous

    UGLY

  • Tris

Sorry guys, still not a fan of the Brown. Out of all the Ubuntu defaults (been using since Feisty) the one shipped with Karmic is the only one that I can bear to use. Usually end up with the Fedora default of Nodoka. Much nicer.

Good that they’re thinking outside the box rather than trying to copy other systems.

  • dave

try to give the credit from where have you seen this article first and write your articles

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

Errrm? Do you mind sharing where you think i’ve copied and pasted this from? I can’t assure you i bloody well haven’t! Articles from this site don’t find their way on to lifehacker, gizmodo etc because they’re rip-offs but because they’re original.I was alerted when this was uploaded onto Gnome-Look. I noticed about 3 other blogs post it a half hour AFTER me (as happens with a lot of my posts)

  • Narfss

    But it changes?

    That theme changes in time:

    Enjoy it.

I think i like it, but it does need some tweaking before i REALLY like it :P

  • Stuart

I’m sorry but imo all three of those variants look hideous. If that became the default it would be the first thing I change on a fresh installation. Just plain ugly.

  • jackw

this theme is nice with a few tweaks!! nothing can beat dust tho

  • Vortex

Honestly I don’ like Ubuntu Sun. I think that the best proposal for the new version of Lucid remains wasp theme.(new 0.80 alpha version with dust colors)

  • http://themikecam.com/ Miquel

Ugh, how can you call this “original and striking.” The gradient title bars are horribly tacky.

  • Daniel

At first I thought it would lookr really ugly, but I like to try new themes, color concepts, gotta have a fair critc, etc. So there I went… and it looks awesome!! Every aspect I thought would look ugly, I was wrong, it blends so well to the theme, most themes – I’m now using it with human controls. Great!

  • http://www.linuxmint.com/ Jimbo

Add another vote to fugly column.

  • Benjamim

That looks horrible… i think that the best thems on ubuntu right now are NEW WAVE ans WASP that’s proposed on Lucid also.

  • Anonymous

I think these look really nice! Much prettier than the default ones we’ve been used to.

I don’t understand the comments in here, saying get rid of the brown – I don’t see any brown in those screenshots! ORANGE != BROWN

  • Myke

    LOL. Oh man…That is horrible.

  • http://stevelove.org Steve Love

That looks hideous. I don’t have a problem with Ubuntu’s tendency toward darker brown color schemes. But seems like with Karmic they’ve trended toward lightening up the brown and made it more yellowish orange. It’s definitely original; I’ve never seen a color scheme so ugly. And striking, yes, but not in a good way.

  • Carl

Oh wait, thats not transparency? Its actual sunshine gradients? Doesn’t matter anyway. Ubuntu has and will probably continue to be flat out ugly right from install. Boot, GDM login and human themes will always be just placeholder in my eyes until they dump the washed out muddy orange/burnt orange/brown evolution they have going on.

  • daas88

    They look awful imo.

They should stick with the current themes and make them better. For instance i’d like to see them polish new wave colors so selections are not salmon (or whatever you call that color) and redesign its metacity. Or making a new metacity for human theme and making the scrollbars thinner, that would be nice too.

  • Alex

Wow, it’s plain and simple ugly. Seriously ugly.

  • http://www.trifunovic.me Nikola Trifunović

I like how Ubuntu Sun theme looks, but it can look much much better. Dust is still the best in my opinion :)

  • xiaomei

    this is beyond awful

  • Anonymous

Holy Crap! This theme looked like POOP until i clicked on it to make it bigger.

    now it looks amazing!!!!!1

  • Exodist

    Its horrible.. Seriously..
Colors dont contrast well, this will cause eye strain in addition to making it hard for the user to see what he/she is looking for.
Colors also do not compliment each other or have a professional appeal.

Hate to sound like a hard ass, but IMHO it would really help you if you read the FreeDesktop guild-lines in addition to some art books on interface designing.

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

      It’s not my theme!

  • Mel

I only like the Metacity buttons, but I agree with most people here, it looks ugly.

I tried Wasp, but I didn’t like it either, I liked the Metacity though.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/XL5IMN4PO2XAFS7FXAWFGIFRNM KnifeySpooney

I dont think they look bad — they’ve definitely got something going on, but I think various controls such as tabs to the background could use a bit more contrast.

<3 goes to the Wasp proposed Lucid theme.

Myself, I think these UbuntuSun themes look really smart.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tommy-Brunn/580040092 Tommy Brunn

Holy mother of God, that is ugly! It looks almost as disgusting as E17!

  • Anonymous

d0od I don’t know what you’re smoking but that theme is BUTT ugly! Good concept, terrible implementation. Maybe with a few (lot) of tweaks it could be promising.

  • lies-and-slander

Extremely horrific, and im pretty sure its a fake. They wouldn’t want to use something that tacky and unprofessional looking after their main motto is to make ubuntu look better for 10.04…

@site admin: and anything with omg in the domain name shouldn’t be trusted anyway…what are you a 10 year old?

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

Well it’s not a fake – you can find it on the wiki and download it on gnome-look. Perhaps you misunderstand the proposed theme process. As for the name – ever heard of Hyperbole?

If we can’t be trusted be sure to inform lifehacker and slashdot who regularly cite us ;)

  • http://www.leifandersen.net Leif Andersen

I read this comment, and first thought that it would be another post with horrible pictures, or something that was completely anti-orange. I must say, I love those colors. It’s taking ubuntu, and making it look like an operating system that’s newer than 2004. I love it.

    it sucks dogs bollocks
