Official Docky Development PPA

Docky now have an official development PPA, so wherever you were getting Docky from previously you’ll probably want to swap and use this one.

Of course, please note the word ‘development’ in the title; this is not a stable Docky PPA. If you’re looking for a stable Docky then I’d advise to stick to Gnome DO for now.

Of course you can still build Docky (check daily, the guys behind Docky are development fiends!) using

For those that don’t know, Docky is now a standalone application and, from some point soon, no longer be part of GNOME Do.

the project is getting better every day, its got smoke theme, Defenestraphobia which btw i don’t know what it does, but it must be something good :p

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

Apparently Defenestraphobia is a “fear of windows”…

Perhaps it’s some form of non-window managing mode making docky -just- a launcher

      • http://seifsallam.co.cc/ Seif Sallam

its not functioning now but once you create another dock you can choose one of them to show windows by checking “Manage windows without launcher”

      • http://launchpad.net/docky Jason Smith

Its a form of intellhide that hides from all windows, not just the active window group. Before you say it, yes it is just a working name. It will be changed before release, we just have not come up with a name for it yet. “Window Dodge” has been suggested, we really want something better however.

        • lol

NNNOOO !!! Please keep the “Defenestraphobia” name in the stable release Jason !! It would give Docky a hint of quirkiness which people would love !!

        • http://twitter.com/SeifSallam Seif Sallam

its hard to remember but i like the name, its amazing

      • http://launchpad.net/docky Jason Smith

Oh I forgot to mention that this is designed specifically for multi monitor users, as normal intellihide is somewhat of a pain for them (the docks get a bit bouncy). It also works fairly well for users who switch between applications frequently.

Excellent! I’ve been waiting for that!
    I do miss a notification bar….but it’s awesome already ^_^

Docky (And Gnome-Do) is the only type of launcher utility I’d need in Ubuntu. Can just have a blank desktop and the bar. I havn’t tried out the stand alone docky, but really enjoyed using the one with gnome-do. I’m eager to see what develops out of it.

That’s how I use my ‘desktop’. I’ve always hated icons on the desktop, so I tweak it so no icons are showing, I used ejecter before Docky’s mounter plugin which is very useful and cool.

I wish the docky team the best!

hey there, why don’t you directly add the

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:docky-core/ppa

link to your posts? Stuff is so much faster to try out that way! And also watch ‘apturl’ closely since there is a (currently disabled sadly) apt+ command that adds a repo and installs a package.

    • Matthew

I second this. add-apt-repository is a wonderful addition to Karmic, and makes adding PPAs much quicker and easier.

I just tried this out (I actually got it working!) and it works fine. However, the Gmail thing doesn’t open Firefox and log on to Gmail when I click on it in the dock. Is there any way to make it like that?

    Thanks.

    Fantastic!!
    Love it.

Docky is beautiful! I’m very glad there’s a version independent of Gnome Do now!

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/SZ5LRC7HMV235RCLCEBXMEJYVY Bryan

Me too – I never really used the search capabilities of Gnome-Do, but rather just used the Docky part of it.

Does anyone know of a way to get a docklet which will give the usual Shutdown/Restart/Log Out options etc?

Also, while I’m at it, a docklet to show the main menu(s) would mean could completely get rid of the top gnome panel, and just use the elegant Docky instead…

Docky finally got a Pin To Dock option when you right click on any running application!
