Minitube 0.8 Released – Flash-free HD YouTube Video ON Your Desktop

MiniTube 0.8 was released today bringing with the ability to play HD videos from YouTube, flash-free and directly on your desktop.

Yes, this doesn’t require the need for Flash! At all!

Also new in the 0.8 release: -

  • MiniTube now remembers volume and mute status across sessions
  • New Translations, including French and Latvian.
  • Removes “cheesy” icons from menus in Linux version
Install MiniTube

The following PPA packages MiniTube for easy install and maintenance on Ubuntu.

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:neversfelde/ppa

It is also available from GetDeb @ getdeb.net/updates/Minitube

The source is available at the official site [link]

You will also need to install the following to get video playback: -

sudo apt-get install phonon-backend-gstreamer gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

Please note that this latest version has yet to hit the PPA or GetDeb but it should arrive within the next few hours so patience is a virtue.

It doesn’t even play the videos that it finds…..

I’m not too familiar with video codecs. So does this have something to do with HTML5 or does it do what the iPhone’s YouTube app does to play YouTube vids without Flash?

  • Matthew

I’m unable to play videos as well (the play button is grayed out) for everything.

    Try this (on Ubuntu Karmic):
    sudo apt-get install phonon-backend-gstreamer gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

    see: http://flavio.tordini.org/minitube/faq
(on other distributions, the package names might just be “gstreamer-ffmpeg” and “gstreamer-plugins-bad”)

I’m curious too. How did they manage to play the videos without flash? It’s quite fast and nice, even with my not-so-good internet connection the videos played without any glitches.

The only thing I disliked is that it is somehow not.. “pulseaudio compliant”. I can’t drive its sound stream to my usb speakers =/

App runs, but does not play any video. If anybody has success playing a video, please post back with the name of the video and I’ll give it a shot… but as with many of the apps that get reported upon here, this one’s just another non-starter for me. Running 64-bit Karmic, gnome, 64-bit Flash 10 (which shouldn’t matter, I assume), nVidia chipset.

Update: just read through the comments and found Matthew’s fix:

    sudo apt-get install phonon-backend-gstreamer gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

…it worked. Videos are playing fine! At the outer fringes of Ubuntu I guess we’re all just beta testers when it comes down to it. :-D
