Just tried it out again after last time when it destroyed my computer. I installed it using the debs from the site. On first start, it froze before I could click anything. xkill’d it, then started it again. This time it allowed me to import some videos before freezing again. xkill’d it, started it again. Imported one video and fast-forwarded to about halfway, then it froze when I tried to play it.

Pitivi may not be as feature-rich, but it’s a damn sight more stable. I’d rather have a video editor that can do the basic stuff than a video editor that promises to be better which I can’t do anything with.

it’s easier to just repair the packages with synaptic, that’s what i did. But I won’t ever add that ppa again, that’s for sure.

Well, the last time you tried it the PPA was broken. No need to install the OS though, that was unnecessary!

But the PPA works now, I assure you. I personally use it.

Perhaps all of them have to get better, but Kdenlive is older and has more features.

It all looks *very* good … but bear in mind that the problems you mentioned in a previous post about OpenShot destroying video capabilities still lurks around to catch out the unwary.

I installed OpenShot from Ubuntu Tweak, knowing it enables third-party PPAs and assuming, therefore, that it would install the “safe” version of OpenShot. Safe it was not. Not only has it made it impossible for me to view *any* videos with *any* standard media player, OpenShot can’t play videos either.

I’ve tried solving the problem but am now trying to get up the motivation to reinstall everything on my machine from OS upwards. Never a lot of fun.

I still think OpenShot has great potential and I’ll undoubtedly try it again in the future … but not until this particular problem is well and truly in the past.

I really had a bad time last time I tried this software, but since you seem to really really like it I’ll give it another try and see if this time it can last at least 5 seconds without crashing. To be fair it actually can last way more than that without crashing…that is until I actually try to use it…if I open it and do nothing it doesn’t crash.

I’ve tried Kdenlive, and for me, it’s a crash-prone, buggy mess. Both OpenShot and PiTiVi are far more stable.

The PPA you mention in the article is not maintained anymore – the new PPA is described here:

This one uses the default packages from the Ubuntu repositories, rather than custom versions.

I’d (perhaps) agree if it had been “most accomplished user-friendly video editor available on Gnome”, but Linux, come on. Just as John: Try Kdenlive. It’s nice to see Openshot evolving but these new features are something kdenlive has had for ages.

I don’t know why you keep going on about this rubbish software, the last time I used the ppa I had to re-install my OS! Try kdenlive.
