Humanity Style DropBox Icons

Continuing our series on 'Humanity Style Icons' for other applications we arrive at cloud storage service DropBox.
There are two different versions available currently: -

dropbox-example-01 dropbox-example-02

Install

Download the replacement icons @ gnome-look.org
Extract the archive.
Hit Alt+F2 and type: -

  • gksu nautilus /usr/share/icons/hicolor

Now copy the contents of either hicolor-01 or 02 (depnding on which icons you prefer) into this folder.
Next you MUST refresh the icon cache or you won't notice a difference!
Open a terminal and type/paste: -

  • sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/hicolor

Now restart DropBox and youll find your new icons sitting in the panel.

Notes

This is the first release of these icons and as such there are only two choices.
A .svg is included with even more choices if you wish to tweak, customize or change the icons yourself.

Ya know, with both of the icon replacements I haven’t been able to get them to display in the bar. They’re getting the old icons from somewhere else and I have no clue where. Even after doing the icon refresh.

      same here.

Have you all tried logging out and back in? Are you sure you choose to ‘replace’ the original dropbox icons? Have you exited DropBox completely and then restarted it? (i couldn’t get them to display because DropBox hadn’t exited properly so wasn’t in the tray but was still chugging away in system-monitor!).

        Have you refreshed your icons?

And finally, did you copy the icons correctly? You needed to move the icons within the folder and NOT the folder itself.

        • AAP

Yes I have refreshed without Dropbox running, the icons seem to be in the right place, the new icon is displayed in my application menu and in my system monitor. I still see the old icon on my taskbar though.

Hi d00d, I checked the link to the Dropbox new icons on Gnome-look and even the creator of the icons says you cannot change the taskbar icons (its in the comments section).

How did you do it then? Would you mind showing us a screenshot? I’m very curious to see it.

        • Mohan

          Check. Check. Check.
          Check.
          Check.
I even restarted my computer…well I needed to after some of the stuff I did and even after that no icon change in the taskbar.

Awesome tip! I love the hicolor-02

couldn’t any one just package them? anyway i think it should be added to the main Humanity Icons set + there should be a Dropbox Folder under Home just like OS X

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

I so long for a home dropbox icon. I currently have an emblem sat on mine but it’s not the same (emblems appear in top right by default =( ) It should be easy to “make” one though, it’s simply a specific folder icon to a specific path.

  • Edward

Doesnt work, still get the same dropbox icon. :(

  • dennishojgaard

Anyone besides d0od who kan make this work???

What i am wondering is also that the old dropbox-iconset has a “connecting/updating” icon with the to blue arrows, a “updated” icon with the little green sign, and the disconnected sign. The new iconset does not seem to contain those??

  • dennishojgaard

btw the new icon appears in the system monitor…

    • Edward

I think these icons only change the application icon, but not the task tray icons.

Curious to hear what d00d says, because if he has got it to work, I wonder how he managed to do it. Also a screenshot would be awesome :)

I actually started a thread about this a while back on Dropbox’s forums. People seem to think that the task tray icons are encoded into the binaries (whatever that means).

I’m currently without Ubuntu (that’s another story grr) so i haven’t been able to try it.

Seem’s i misunderstood, partly because the rest of the authors work DOES replace icons, i just assumed. My bad, post being deleted in 5… 4….3…
