Get The ChromeOS Application Menu In Ubuntu [Working Again]

Google ChromeOS has the 'application menu' in the browser: -

You can, actually, get this in Google Chrome or Chromium.

  • First you need to edit the command you start Chrome/ium with.
  • Right click the menu in the top left hand corner. CHoose 'edit menus'.
  • Find your Chrome/ium launcher in the 'Internet' side pane.
  • Click it and then choose 'edit' from the right hand side.
  • In the 'command' field add the following at the end of the command:

-user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; CrOS i686 9.10; en-US) AppleWebKit/532.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/4.0.253.0 Safari/532.5" -pinned-tab-count=1

  • Close and launch the browser from the menu.
  • Then paste the following URL into your browser.

http://welcome-cros.appspot.com/menu

  • Right click the tab and choose 'pin' to get a truly ChromeOS look!

Thanks to Mark for letting me know how to get this running again after Google nixed the previous way.

Nice. On the other hand, how did you get to show only the favicons in the bookmark bar? Is it an extension, or a setting? Or simply deleting the text?:)

      Simple deleting the text!

    This is pretty cool!
One question: when I click on the to-do list icon, i am asked to log into my @google.com account, which I don’t have. How do I get one, or how do I get to log in with my gmail.com account? thanks.

Short answer is that at the moment you can’t. You have to be a Google employee to get an @google and the “to do” panel app is, seemingly, still being developed.

Ok, i suspected as much! thanks for your reply, keep up the good work on this awesome blog.

They should relese this system after it’s completly done. Now they are wasting “first impression”

Yeah i have to agree with that.

On the other hand its a great way of getting people familiar with the UI, honing it and fixing what doesn’t work. I guess…

Doesn’t seem to be working now. On Chrome and Chromium, it just gives me a completely blank page. Not even an tag to be found.

it’s so sad that they removed this! I was so excited about this at work.. and I come home to pin the page on my laptop and now it’s gone! Very angry and sad… well here’s to hoping it’ll come back soon! i’m sure you’ll let us know right? btw, you have a cool website. Been following it for a few months now! Thanks!

The site checks your browser user agent string, so you can still use it if you add some info to the launch command. Check this link for the precise instructions http://tuxtweaks.com/2009/11/use-the-chrome-os-start-page/

Great blog, thanks a lot for all the tips

  • Mark

Ok so heres the code you paste at the end of the shortcut command to get the Chrome shortcut page, and have it pinned:

    -user-agent=”Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; CrOS i686 9.10; en-US) AppleWebKit/532.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/4.0.253.0 Safari/532.5″ -pinned-tab-count=1
