Google Maps cannot display cycle routes, nearest pub or cinema, transportation etc on the map itself currently. (Street View has some of this info, but not all and is only available in odd cities - mostly in the good ol' US of A). This app also allows for some awesome expansion and integration with the GNOME desktop which you fail to have thought about - a map in a browser can't do much of that. Also you might want to read the "future" part of the article which lays out several features coming soon - i don't remember google maps telling me the weather when i looked at a location... Or allowing my buddy or showing me the location of a buddy on Empathy. Google Maps is in a browser, this isn’t.
