UbuntuOne Gets ANOTHER New Icon – This Time It’s Pretty Nice!

UbuntuOne received a new icon (again) in today’s Karmic Updates. Gone is the slightly indecipherable HDD and Cloud emblem and in just a fluffy cute cloud.

This time the icon achieves it’s aim: it is distinguished from the rest of the “system” icons, yet it’s as visually obtrusive as it was in previous versions.

Thanks to reader motang for letting me know there was an update!

    Hi, I read your blog and think that, contrary to most other ubuntu blogs, almost every single one of your posts are interesting and exciting and fun.

    I am not sure if you have covered this yet: but I think the new Disk Manager (replacing gParted) is completely awesome and deserves some lovin’.

    Keep up the great work.

    oh, and BTW: am i the only one who cant use it? when i open the app it takes me to login to launchpad. and when i do, it tells me that i am logged in, but i get bounced back to the login-page again. anyone know how to get past that?

      I had the same problem.Try this:
      -Launch Opera browser, go to one.ubuntu.com and log in to your launchpad account. Everything should be OK
      -launch the Ubuntu One app and go to the website in Firefox and you will be able to add your computer to the Ubuntu One service

        Ok, ill try it. I dont use Opera, but i might have to install it ad hoc then.

        thanks!

    Hi, what theme are you using and how I can put the date in two lines, it looks really amazing!

  • Adam

    hmm, also looks almost exactly the same as the zumo drive icon, could be a bit confusing.

    approved!

    Looks really good but… won´t it be kind of confusing next to the weather applet? I mean… it would make me think it´s always cloudy outside…

      My thoughts exactly.

    I’m curious if users will like the icons I made for my icon theme Mashup Five.

    • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

      I love your UbuntuOne icon.

      I used to adore MashUp but i find it strange using such a glossy set since humanity, breathe etc. The blue folder icons vs. the dark mime types doesn’t look good either. Overall it’s still the mashUp i knew and loved, though.

      (and how about some user session applet icons? the stock empathy ones are so boring; humanity’s really hit the nail on the head with their speech bubble ones.)

    @Joey Alexithymia:
    Kindly check facts , before you blog about something.
    First and foremost , Humanity icon theme exists in 2 variants by default.
    - Humanity theme is for light panels and The white cloud fits perfectly on a light panel.
    - Humanity-Dark theme , is for use with a dark and transparent panel. and it has a separate darker less ‘visually obtrusive’ cloud… ;)

    Since you are using the icon from the light theme , it is brighter. hence it appears obtrusive.

    How do i know this? well , I’m the author of those icons! and I’v made the separate darker Cloud especially to avoid this ‘obtrusive’ appearance ;)

    Kindly double-check before posting blogs.The regular[uninformed] users might get mislead by such comments. Thanks.

    [FYI: the UbuntuOne harddisk+cloud icon is the icon provided by the UbuntuOne package and still exists in the hi-color folder and will be used when the user switches themes .
    The present Cloud icon is provided by the Humanity icon theme.]

      I don’t want to get rude, but at the time of posting this article (pre RC, even) only one set of humanity icons were available in Karmic at the time of writing.

      I’m not the habit of re-writing previous articles to match the “now” when it was written as a reaction to the “then.” Nobody cares about UbuntuOne icons in Karmic now because they have karmic themselves.

      And quite how my so-called “uniformed readers” would get put off by my personal remarking that the icon is still eye-catchingly noticeable compared to the rest of the karmic icons is a bit.. questionable? The’yre still going to have it installed; I’m pretty sure they won’t ditch an entire karmic install based on MY opinion of one icon!

        On the contrary , if you had checked the changelog for the humanity-icon-theme , you would have noticed this >
        —————-
        humanity-icon-theme (0.4.1-0ubuntu1) karmic; urgency=low

        * New upstream release
        – Adds a Humanity-Dark theme and uses darker grey levels for Humanity;
        LP: #436485.

        [to check the changelog: select the package in synaptic and select from the menu , Package > Download Changelog]

        So, the Humanity-Dark theme , has been added nearly *2 weeks* prior to this blog. It was among the first updates after beta.
        And the darker cloud was in the Humanity-Dark theme the same time the white cloud was added. And yes , most of the screenshots in this blog are of the Humanity theme. ;)

        My comment ,regarding fact checking, was in general. Since there are a few errors in *some* of the blogs, which are usually minor errors.[I'v noticed these errors in the past and just disregarded them and moved on. This was the first time i took time to comment. I didnt want to mention that there are errors in other the blog posts too and just kept my comment to this particular blog. I'll take time one day and mail you the errors I'v noticed , I dont recall them right now , I'd have to read back a lot of the blogs ;p ]
        But these errors are sometimes misleading to the user who wants to be informed about that particular feature.
        And bugs do get filed on launchpad quoting misleading blog posts [not yet any such bug quoting from your blog, iiirc ], users just quote , “It is the same as posted by the author in this blog”.
        Since Ubuntu is getting to be more popular among the non-techie users too, the ‘uninformed users’ just tend to believe what is posted and dont check before filing a bug too. This just adds to the pile of the bugs we get at launchpad.

        My comment is not to discredit your blog nor to discourage you . You do write good informative , entertaining blogs , and your blog does get dugg quite often.[thats how I got to this blog too ;) ] Keep up the good work and them coming.
        Just remember , with great power comes great responsibility ;)
