Remove The 60sec Shutdown/Reboot Timer In Karmic Koala

Want to get rid of the '60 Seconds Until Shutdown/Reboot/Logout' countdown?

Blog reader knorre handily posted the how-to in a comment, which I’m re-posting here so it's not overlooked!

Simply open a terminal and: -

  • gconftool-2 -s ‘/apps/indicator-session/suppress_logout_restart_shutdown’ –type bool true

No countdown!

Thanks knorre!

    Does it works on 9.04?

This is really a bug that I’m hoping will be resolved before 9.10 is released. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-session/+bug/425552

you can also just right click the power icon on the top right and click preferences. Deselect confirm log out.

I don’t mind the countdown, but I do see text before boot up on both of my karmic install on desktop and notebook, in 9.04 and previous ones it was graphical boot up. How can I stop those text and get the cool white Ubuntu logo on black background? :)

      Same here… it’s really annoying.

      Anyone have any suggestions?

It’s normal :) Pretty much everyone using the Alpha’s/beta’s see it too; it wont’ be there for the final release, however, so just bear in mind you’re using an “in progress” version of Ubuntu and not a polished article :)

I absolutely love you site and have been following it for years, it’s my number bookmark !

Your desktops always looks gorgeous, might I ask how it’s configured (theme, icon, font, etc) ? I am one of those perfectionists (it’s a disease, trust me) and for some reason no matter how I configure ubuntu (themes, icons, etc) , I can never get a that ‘perfect’ desktop….

I never feel my desktop is perfect, either! It’s an elusive beast.

The basics of my desktop always stay the same mostly.

droid sans font for the menus, etc
      gnome-do docky
i used to use melaie-white icon set, now i use humanity (comes default in Karmic!)
I used to use Dust GTK theme but now i use a combination of dust and shiki-dust metacity.
      covergloobus for coverart.

if you show me a screenshot of what you’re after i can be much more specific in terms of what i used. I’ll even pop everything in my dropbox for easy download, too!

Loving the site, I too love your desktop layout, and would like to mimic it on my system. especially your top bar (which looks semi transparent). would you be able to let me know how you achieved the look. Also your window borders as well. I’m new to linux, although have a fair understanding of how to customise the system. would be great if you could provide links to the desktop theme you use?

        • http://omgubuntu.co.uk/ d0od

          Sure :)

You can make your panel transparent two ways:

First method is to right click on the panel you want to change > properties > background tab > select solid colour and then reduce the opacity. This method is great… but can look a little flat.

The way in which i do it is to use a panel background. In most cases i use one called ‘Smoke’ which you can download @ http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Smoke+-+a+gnome+panel+bg?content=99748

SAVE IT SOMEWHERE SAFE! And then go to panel properties as described above but this time choose ‘panel background’. Navigate to the background you just downloaded and click apply! :D

Some themes, however, don’t let you fully ‘theme’ the panel this way, so the menu and notification areas don’t change. This sucks, so make sure you choose a theme that does let you. Dust is a good choice and is what i use.

This is exactly the fix that I was looking for. I hope that they remove this forced prompt in the next release of Ubuntu.
    Really enjoy your blog!
