Karmic Gets New Sound For Empathy

Karmic Beta was today gifted with an updated set of sounds for use with Empathy.

I say ‘Sounds’, but i can only discern one new one and it’s used when you get a new instant message in Empathy – Ubuntu’s default IM client.

If you don’t use Empathy or you can’t be bothered to try and hear it, this is it: -

No other new sounds as of yet…

      Nope. Only change is that one new empathy sound… I guess it took a REALLY long time to make and they ran out of time??

        actually i think they just copied that sound from the freedesktop sound theme, rather then create a new one.

    Amusingly, that’s the same as the Kopete sound for incoming IM’s. I use KDE 4.3 under Ubuntu 9.10. I guess they wanted to make the sounds the same under both desktops?

    Wow, that’s a terrible default sound to have for an incoming IM. I’ll be changing that back to the normal Pidgin/Emesene sound if I switch Karmic Koala.

    Don’t like it. Absolutely love Skype’s sounds though.

    Was thinking about this recently, and it’s a real shame that Ubuntu’s sounds are so far behind. Not only do the sounds themselves suck, but PulseAudio crackles them 50% of the time if you turn on your button sound effects, but on another topic the Emerald themes not being the default also is a shame. Shouldn’t let Vista and Mac beat free software like they are. I think if Ubuntu wants to stay on top, it really needs to pretty up its default interfaces and sound themes. It has very much improved tho at least, at least with the themes, but could go much further.

      I said the same thing above. I guess they’re going for continuity. Nothing wrong with that, I guess… but the sound itself isn’t very good. Whatever floats their boat I guess
