Hulu Release Native Desktop App For Ubuntu

Hulu €“ the popular American TV streaming site €“ today finally launched a native Linux desktop application for their service.

Built on Fedora and Ubuntu 9.04, the app is designed to play nice with Ubuntu from the get go. Its only dependencies are: –

  • GTK+ 2.12 or higher
  • GLib 2.16 or higher
  • LIRC 0.8.2 or higher (required for remote control functionality)

Which all come pre-installed on Ubuntu! Hurrah!

Sadly i have no way to test Hulu as it's an American-only service at the moment. (It is due to launch in the UK during 2010, though.) So be sure to let me know how it goes in the comments!

Download

Available for both 32bit and 64bit installs, you can grab the user-reidnly .deb packages from the official Hulu labs site @ http://www.hulu.com/labs/hulu-desktop-linux

Thanks to madjr on the ubuntuforums for alerting me to this!

Yep got it this morning, and it’s pretty cool!

I do wish they’d stream outside the US. If they ever include Australia, I’ll remember this moment.

Glad to see Hulu showing Linux some love.

well there is way if you made a search using VPN in Network Manager, but the problem with this is that it is a very slow connection, so you won’t enjoy streaming movies.

but any way, i wish that HULU, Pandora, and YouTube stop that “Only For US” restriction.

You can use hulu anywhere in the world. Just use Ivacy (paid VPN with IP’s from russia, uk and USA). Set up VPN in Ubuntu (pretty straightforward) and it works – tested :)

I get the following error message during installation of the 64-bit .deb file on Ubuntu 9.10 Beta:

dpkg: unable to read the filedescriptor flags for : Bad file descriptor

Sorry to be a pain, but anybody know a way around this?

Just installed using sudo dpkg -i and all’s well! There seems to be a problem installing from the graphical installer (gdebi-gtk).

As long as I install by typing in a terminal, it works fine:

      sudo dpkg -i huludesktop_amd64.deb

Thanks for the tip! This has been bugging me with a lot of .debs I’ve downloaded!

I keep getting an error claiming that huludesktop can’t find my libflashplayer.so, even though I’ve modified the ~/.huludesktop file to point to my plugins. The thing won’t even launch…

Works perfect!! No problems yet! Suppa awesome too, I can now turn up the volume without it coming out of fullscreen! Watched Night of the Living Dead yesterday and a couple other shows from my queue without a hitch! :D ….nvm…updates messed something up this morning…now it wont start. Other than that…it’s AWESOME!! lol

    • ItsBlueB

Ok…nvm again…it just took a lot longer to open than yesterday! So All is good!! :D

We have 2 mb of ram, which interprets at 1.9 – just under the recommended specs. So, in low res it’s a little halty – but no worse than a messy digital signal through a converter box.

Oh, wow. A desktop app that recommends 2Gb RAM? On Linux?

      Cah-razey!
