On Mono

As of today i will be labelling any mono-using application with a little banner pointing out as such.

I personally have no issue with Mono however i know some people do and would like to be made aware before downloading, etc. So for those folks who like to avoid Mono €“ look out for the following banner.

I think the mono banner should be more at the top of the page so people who are opposed to it don’t spend time reading about the app, only to find out it requires mono to run.

It will normally be at the top, however it’d be weird starting an article on an application with a blurb about a new banner i’m introducing.

why all that problem with mono, i hate mircrosoft but c# is well designed language, its performance is better than Java, and cross-platform so Open-Source applications can rise in different platforms, and all C# applications that i used till now work perfect. sure its performace isn’t as fast as c++, but its easier to develop and fix.

      I have to agree (somewhat.)

My only pet peeve is when applications) start to cater more towards a Windows version and end up having to leave features out of the Linux version because it would require a bit more effort. If it was a Windows port to Linux – fair enough, but when an application starts in Linux and gets a windows port and then jumps ship… hmm…

(There is an example, but i dare not incurr the wrath of fanbois)

“when applications start to cater more towards a Windows version and end up having to leave features out of the Linux version because it would require a bit more effort”

Which applications are you referring to? I think Monos pretty decent, but I don’t know of any mono application that has actually been a success as a .Net application. Even the Banshee port hasn’t seen the light of day.

Thanks for the mono warning thingy.

Mono might be better than Java, but frankly, lots of languages are better than Java.

    Man, that is *ATROCIOUS*.

Mono supports XCopy deployment, so the fact that you need to do the ./configure / make / make install dance is ridiculous.

I’m only giving the official instructions from the install file so don’t hate me!
