The first public version of Gwibber 2.0 has been released on the Gwibber daily-builds PPA.

Gwibber is an open-source microblogging client for the Gnome desktop that allows you to read, post and follow status updates from a variety of social networking sites ” including Twitter and Facebook.

Gwibber 2.0 sports a completely redesigned interface, simple ‘account’ configuration wizards and more.

In “normal” mode, a drop down menu replaces the previous versions tab bar for navigating to replies, etc.

Alternatively you can navigate in “tree mode” – which i think is much quicker to use.

Support for more accounts has also been added to Gwibber 2.0, though support for RSS seems to be missing for the time being.

You can see the currently supported services in the screenshot below: –

The ‘update’ field remains where it was by residing at the bottom, and if you’ve used Gwibber before you’ll adjust to the rest of the changes within a few minutes.

Bugs

A few bugs noticed in this pre-release version: –

  • Minimize to tray doesn’t work even if enabled
  • the UI doesn’t play nice with some theme/icon sets
