You can convert video for your iPod, iPod Touch and other PMP players using a free, open-source app called Handbrake.

The full spiel on Handbrake is that it’s an “open-source, GPL-licensed, multi-platform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for Mac OS X, Linux and Windows.”

Which as well as sounding a bit geeky, also sounds pretty nice!

It currently supports the following formats and codecs: –

  • File format: MP4, MKV, AVI or OGM
  • Video: MPEG-4, H.264, or Theora (1 or 2 passes or constant quantizer/rate encoding)
  • Audio: AAC, MP3, Vorbis or AC-3 pass-through (supports encoding of several audio tracks)

You can download it from the following links:

  • Handbrake GTK GUI (Ubuntu 8.10 32-bit) (9.4 MB)
  • Handbrake GTK GUI (Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit) (10 MB)

(NB: I use Handbrake in Jaunty and it works flawlessly)
