So many really great ideas pop up on brainstorm.ubuntu.com that it’s a shame not all can be implemented.

One very popular idea right now is the concept of going beyond ‘icons’ as merely static launchers and adding representative data to them.

I just made that sound very dry, so it’s easier to take a look at what this would look like.

You insert a CD-R and instead of a static, generic ‘cd’ icon you get an icon that tells you something visually.

Another great example on the ‘beyond icons’ brainstorm page is that of the trash cash! How often do you remember to empty it? If, like me, you don’t even have it displayed on your desktop to check during boredom you might forget all together!

A visually informative icon would be able to alert you better than the current ‘empty/full’ implementation.

There are far more useful scenarios for having funky informative icons ” such as a hard disk icon that shows you how much space it has, or a folder that has file size information on it’s icon.

If you like this idea, vote it up on brainstorm by visiting its page and clicking the big green ‘up’ arrow!
