Ubuntu launched the first official version of its new Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) last week, providing a powerful yet optimised user interface for netbook needs.

Annoyingly though the debut of Ubuntu Netbook Remix (which is based on Ubuntu 9.04 ‘Jaunty Jackalope’) has been upstaged by a sizeable number of bugs on a slew of popular netbook models.

The most impact of these irritating issues is on the original ASUS Eee PC 701, but also also affecting the 900 series, where a kernel quirk makes the trackpad suuuuuuprt sluuuuugish when hovering over items in the new netbook launcher UI.

So awful is this experience that it makes the entire distro pretty much unusable.

Thankfully there’s an easy fix.

1. Download both of the following .deb files from a helpful PPA setup by Canonical developers: –

linux-headers-2.6.28-11-generic_2.6.28-11.43~lp349314apw5_i386.deb

and

linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic_2.6.28-11.43~lp349314apw5_i386.deb

2. Once downloaded, double click on the ‘linux-headers’ deb to install. Let it do it’s thing.

3. Double click on the ‘linux-image’ .deb to install.

4. Reboot.

Once your system comes back (which on these flash-based devices is pretty quick) you’ll find moving the point on the screen no longer results in an horrendous lag experience.
